Curriculum

Aims:

Our English Department strives to provide a comprehensive English learning environment for students at all levels.

Through engaging in English lessons, students will be able to:
1. Build their proficiency in the four key literacy learning areas: reading, writing, speaking and listening.

2. Grow their confidence in listening, understanding and communicating.

3. Develop a love for reading and writing whilst expanding their English vocabulary.

4. To approach learning creatively, fostering a passion for language learning.

School-based Curriculum:

Our school-based curriculum features key components to ensure students of every learning style are supported and encouraged.

1. e-Platforms

A. Fun ‘n’ Friends

Our school has been in collaboration with the e-platform provider “Fun ‘n’ Friends” since 2003. Through the support of Fun ‘n’ Friends the school has created a school-based curriculum for P.1-3, using online learning elements to develop literacy skills.

B. Moodle

The Moodle platform is used to promote interactive learning to complement our school-based curriculum both in and beyond the classroom. Self-designed exercises, dictation recordings, links and learning resources are uploaded to the platform to enrich and consolidate students' learning.

C. Google Classroom

Google Classroom also provides an e-learning platform for students to access learning resources both in class and at home. Additionally, teachers can use Google Classroom to send reminders, assign homework and provide feedback to students.

D. Epic Books

Epic Books is an e-book library with over 40,000 books from 250+ publishers, allowing students to read anytime, anywhere. When linked with students’ Google Classroom accounts, teachers can assign age and reading level appropriate e-books that supplement and enhance the curriculum.

2. Literacy Programmes

A. School-based Phonics Programme

A synthetic phonics programme, informed by U.K education standards, has been developed and created by our NET teacher to build phonetic knowledge and understanding. The programme is explicitly taught from P.1-3 and teaches core skills such as sound recognition, blending and decoding. Learning booklets include both in class and at home learning activities to help students expand their learning.

B. Ready 2 Read (R2R)

Our R2R literacy programme is taught by the NET teacher in P.1-2. R2R focusses on building reading confidence whilst also cultivating positive moral values. R2R lessons aim to build vocabulary, refine grammar knowledge and boost confidence through various learning activities. Learning booklets have been designed and produced to provide a step-by-step structure and aid consolidation.

C. Speaking 2 Writing (S2W)

Our new writing scheme has been supported by the EDB NET Section and is currently implemented in P.3 by the NET teacher. This U.K founded model uses oral performance as the basis of writing. Students engage in a range of activities which encourage a creative, fun-filled approach to writing. Learning booklets, videos and e-platform materials are provided to give students ownership of and confidence in their writing capabilities. Over the school year, students participate in both fiction and non-fiction writing modules.

3. Additional Curriculum Elements of Note

  • Cross-curricular learning is conducted in some levels.
  • Cursive writing is taught in P.3.
  • Dictionary skills are explicitly taught in P.4.

Catering for Learner Diversity:

Our school has undertaken a range of measures to ensure that all students are given the opportunity to learn and grow.

1. VIP lessons

VIP lessons provide a tailor-made curriculum aimed at students’ level to boost confidence and encourage peer supported learning. Students are grouped according to their language ability. All students, regardless of their English proficiency, are motivated and supported to reach their full potential.

2. Intervention programmes

Intensive Remedial Teaching Programme (IRTP) small group classes are provided to help students who require more support with their learning.

3. Enrichment programmes

A. English Ambassador Programmes (E.A.P Training)

E.A.P Training lessons are conducted by the NET teachers as a part of our weekly after school schedule. The aim of E.A.P Training is to provide students with a passion for English by engaging in a range of activities such as storytelling, pen-pal letter writing and magazine publishing. Ambassadors are encouraged to promote English-language learning both inside their classrooms and beyond.

Senior Ambassadors: Open to P.4-6

Junior Ambassadors: Open to P.2-3

B. English Drama

P.2 English classes are given the opportunity to engage in an English-based drama enrichment class. Popular English fairytales and fables are adapted to fit students’ learning level. Through drama-based learning, students can practise their reading, speaking and listening skills.

C. Interview Preparation Workshops

P.6 students are supported by the NET teacher to prepare, practise and improve their interview skills. Students can learn how to effectively introduce themselves, engage in group discussion activities and answer teachers’ questions.

English Activities:

Our school organizes a variety of English-based activities over the academic year.

These activities include:

  • English Activity Day is held each year to promote language learning through fun activities.
  • English extra-curricular activities are held during extra-curricular activity periods and after school.
  • Self-funded extra-curricular activities held by outside organizations are held on Saturdays or after school.
  • Language-rich learning activities (LRLE) are held twice a year to promote the use of English to communicate outside classroom.
